Blue Bottle Ferry Building

This project updates Blue Bottle’s existing café in San Francisco’s busy historic Ferry Building Marketplace. Anchoring a corner merchant space between the pier and the Marketplace’s 3-story sky-lit “Atrium,” the new café provides dual expressions of the prototypical Blue Bottle refined object. On the Nave side, popular with tourists, the café presents a 24-foot long, cantilevered stainless steel front bar that is selectively carved to integrate features like a pitcher rinser and ice pan. A minimal pastry display marks the point of sale. Around the corner, the side bar’s open order window celebrates utilitarian beauty by revealing back-of-house specialty tools like the custom pour-over station. Pale blue cabinetry shields a highly calibrated back-of-house, which hums to keep up with the busy in- and out-of-towners.
