Jensen Architects and CounterPulse have partnered on “Show Box”, one of fifty jury-selected projects to be installed as part of San Francisco’s inaugural Market Street Prototyping Festival. Inspired by the grand entertainment history of the Central Market Street district and the continuing role this street plays as venue for performance arts, this project provides a platform for both spectator and performer. A topography of repurposed cardboard tubes stand like audience rows overlooking a stage. The resultant form provides a variety of seat heights and configurations for several impromptu activities: enjoying musical buskers, viewing dance performances, watching a projected movie, or simply taking respite to people watch. During the three-day festival Show Box will host live arts programming, curated, produced and performed by CounterPulse artists. Our collaboration represents the type of cross-sector partnership needed to help forge a new identity for this rapidly changing part of the City.
