Sail House

This single-family infill project overcomes challenges of space and context to create a modern take on the San Francisco row house. Located on a narrow site on Russian Hill, the curved facade evokes the dominant pattern of nearby bay windows, and defers spatially to the neighboring Edwardian structure. Inside, large open floor plans are served by a narrow support spine along the east wall. This opaque bar captures storage, circulation and restrooms, opening the glazed living areas to abundant light from the south and views of San Francisco Bay to the north. A walkway off of the living room bridges across to a roof garden atop the existing structure at the rear of the site, maximizing the owner’s utilization of the property.
