Center for the Art of Translation

Small in Scale, Rich in Legacy

A historic 1909 brick building is thoughtfully transformed into a dynamic, permanent home for literary translation.

A New Home for the Center for the Art of Translation

The Center for the Art of Translation (CAT) has found a permanent home on Commercial Street—a historic artery that once marked the 1849 Gold Rush shoreline. The nonprofit’s new headquarters functions as a global hub, integrating specialized office zones with a public bookstore and venue space designed to facilitate community exchange and international panels.

Past Lives, Present Potential

Originally built in 1908 in the aftermath of the earthquake, this petite brick “dollhouse” has served as a brewery, a cigar factory, a locksmith shop, and a restaurant. While neighboring Montgomery Street was the prestigious seat of banks, the lanes of Commercial and Leidesdorff acted as the city’s industrious engine room, bustling in the 1920s with printers, binderies, and photoengravers. The current renovation honors this legacy of craftsmanship through custom millwork that blurs the line between architecture and furniture, creating a tactile environment that makes a poetic return to the building’s roots in the world of the printed word.

Layered Spaces

The building’s compact footprint inspired a vertically layered program that maximizes every square inch of the historic shell. The ground floor serves as the public face, housing the bookstore and community event space, while the upper levels are dedicated to CAT’s operations. A library surrounded by workstations occupies the second floor, with an open-plan studio located on the third. To expand the usable area, a new rooftop deck provides a flexible outdoor retreat for gatherings, offering rare views of the surrounding Financial District from within the building’s narrow urban envelope.

Architecture Meets Atmosphere

To support CAT’s hybrid publishing model, the ground-level interior is designed for rapid transformation. A large integrated screen and sophisticated AV systems allow the space to toggle between “bookstore” and “event” mode, enabling international livestreams and broadcasts. Discreet acoustic controls and modular furnishings ensure the atmosphere can shift seamlessly from the quiet solitude of browsing to the high energy of a public reading. Every architectural element is calibrated for this flexibility, serving as a technological bridge that connects local audiences with translators and authors from around the world.

Technical Ingenuity in a Tight Envelope

Bringing an unreinforced brick building up to modern standards required significant structural coordination, including a comprehensive seismic retrofit and a lowered basement slab to increase functional height. The design team integrated new MEP systems, accessible circulation, and egress pathways while navigating the constraints of the original 1909 footprint. A key preservation success is the treatment of the roof, where the existing historic parapet was adapted to double as the roof deck guardrail. This solution elegantly balances strict building codes with utility, ensuring the structure’s iconic aesthetic remains intact for its next century of use.
